Pennies for Patients

Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Academy recently received this letter (excerpted below):

On behalf of the New York City Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) thank you for donating to this year’s Pennies for Patients program at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Academy during the 2018-18 school year. Your school raised an amazing $834.84 and LLS is incredibly grateful for the devotion of the students, parents and faculty who have worked so hard to help fulfill our mission: to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and to improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

We are confident that through funding research, LLS has contributed to dramatic increases in the survival rates for both childhood and adult blood cancers. This year we saw experienced major research advancements. The FDA approved in July CAR (chimeric antigen receptor) T-cell immunotheraphy, a treatment in which a patient’s T-cells, the soldiers of the immune system, are genetically reprogrammed to find and kill cancer cells. Over the past two decades, LLS provided $40 million in funding for more than 15 researchers and companies around the world to develop this revolutionary approach to treating cancer. LLS’s long term investment has paid off because this treatment will be used not just for blood cancers, but it is also being tested to treat breast, pancreatic, and many other forms of cancer.

The goal of the Pennies for Patients program is to not only raise money for research and patient services, but to change students, by helping them develop life skills and connecting them with science, research, and advocacy. The intention is to inspire the cancer researchers of tomorrow in teaching them about things like leadership, teamwork and the importance of giving back. We trust that your students’ participation in Pennies for Patients this year has fostered a stronger awareness of others and a love of giving back to their community.

Thank you again for dedicating your time and energy to making Pennies for Patients a success at Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Academy. I look forward to working with you and your students again next year. Together, we are saving lives and improving the quality of life for countless patients and families, now and for generations to come.

Until A Cure,
