St. Michael’s Catholic Academy is honored to have Chief Chan of the New York Police Department as our Guest Speaker at our Graduation Ceremony scheduled for June 14, 2019.

The following is a biography of Chief Chan provided by the NYPD:

Thomas M. Chan

Chief of Transportation

Thomas M. Chan was named the Chief of Transportation for the New York City Police Department on February 18, 2014.

Chief Chan joined the Department in January 1982. He began his career on patrol in the 26th Precinct, where he served until November 1985 when he was promoted to Sergeant. He was promoted to Lieutenant in May 1989; Captain in July 1993; Deputy Inspector in August 1995; Inspector in November 2000; Deputy Chief in October 2004; Assistant Chief in January 2010 and Chief of Community Affairs in April 2013.

He has served as the Commanding Officer of Patrol Borough Brooklyn South, School Safety Division, the 5th Precinct and Manhattan South Detective Operations.  He served as the Adjutant of Patrol Borough Manhattan South and Patrol Borough Staten Island as well as Executive Officer of Patrol Borough Queens North, Patrol Borough Manhattan South and the 5th and 7th Precincts. Additionally, he has servedin Highway Units 1 and 2, the Traffic Division and the Office of Chief of Department.

As Chief of Transportation, Chief Chan oversees roughly 3,500 uniformed and civilian members of the service in key operational areas, including Highway Patrol, the Traffic Enforcement District, the Traffic Operations District, and the Traffic Management Center. Several smaller units that perform specialized functions directly report to him, such as the Collision Investigation Squad, the TrafficStat Unit, the Citywide Traffic Task Force and Tow Operations. He is also directly responsible for the development and implementationof the Department’s role in the Vision Zero Initiative,including its enforcement and outreach efforts throughout the city.

Chief Chan holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Hospital Administration from St. John’s University. He is married to his wife Ellen and together they are the proud parents of 2 sons: Adam and Justin.
