St. Michael’s Catholic Academy is a member school in the Two-Way Immersion Network for Catholic Schools (TWIN-CS), an initiative of the Roche Center for Catholic Education at Boston College. Six staff members participated in the 2017 Summer Academy at TWIN-CS.
Guided by the significant social, cognitive, and creative benefits of learning a second language shown in the most recent research, we provide a rich linguistic and cross-cultural experience for young learners. Taking advantage of their ability to acquire language, our Catholic dual-language program aims for bilingualism, biliteracy, and academic achievement.
Kindergarten through grade 4 students are currently being offered classes in English and Mandarin. The program is expanding to 5th grade for the 2018-2019 school year.
In our program, English and Mandarin teachers collaborate extensively to create an immersion curriculum in which all content subjects (literacy, social, science, math, music and art) are taught both in English and Mandarin.
